Mississippi is an intriguing destination. It is the state where African Americans have suffered greatly from the slave trade, exploitation on cotton plantations, the terror invoked by the Ku Klux Klan, and government's segregation policies. But it is also here that the blues was born, that music which has had such an unparalleled influence on all the popular music that followed. It is out of that suffering that the black community throughout the South birthed, nurtured and spread the blues in their effort to build a decent life in the face of so much inhumanity.
